Committed leftist whose turbulent political activity resulted in multiple jailings and exiles between 1943 and 1973. Theodorakis made a name for himself in Paris in the mid-1950s and gained international recognition with his infectious score for Michael Cacoyannis' "Zorba the Greek" (1964). He has worked a number of subsequent times with Cacoyannis as well as with Costa-Gavras ("Z" 1969, "State of Siege" 1973) and Sidney Lumet ("Serpico" 1973).
