May: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
When: May 22
Who: Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen; directed by Steven Spielberg
What: Apparently, the plot is still being kept under wraps, but it looks like Indy travels to the lost city of Atlantis. His entourage includes newcomer Mutt Williams (LaBeouf) and old girlfriend Marion Ravenwood (Allen).
Brian Says: What about the 19-year layoff? What about Harrison’s age? What about this LaBeouf kid? What about the story line? How will they make it all work? Oh, they’ll make it work! Indy is no The Terminal for director Spielberg, and it’s no Firewall for star Ford; this is the real deal. These two, as well as producer George Lucas, are decades-old icons in their fields, and it’s not just because they know how to set box office records. They all, in fact, know--nay, helped invent--the formula that makes movies exciting and successful. No matter your cinematic tastes, no matter your skepticism, no matter what you (don’t) hear, this is one of the most exciting film-going events in many years. Want proof? LaBeouf’s announcement of the mere title at September’s MTV VMAs caused a huge stir.
Kit Says: Who in their right mind ISN’T excited about this movie? Of course, with Ford once again donning the fedora and whip, I may have had a moment of the same trepidation: too old to play the part. I think Ford may have had the similar thoughts, since this fourth Indiana Jones installment took awhile to get on its feet. But I’ve now fully embraced Indy’s return, knowing that Ford and Steven Spielberg rarely ever disappoint when they sink their teeth into a good action-adventure. Also having “it” boy Shia LaBeouf and actress de jour Blanchett in the film doesn’t hurt either.
