6. The Backwoods (2 ½ stars)
Cast: Gary Oldman and Paddy Considine
The Verdict: You know this is a vacation that’s going to end badly the second Oldman and Considine walk into a Spanish country pub and receive the evil eye from the locals. Soon these tourists are trying to save a feral-like girl from a family straight out of Deliverance. Director Koldo Serra takes his time getting things going so he can first explore the strained relations between Considine and his wife. But once the hostilities begin, Serra executes the bloody proceedings in a furious and brutal fashion. Oldman shows off his survival skills while Considine makes a convincing transformation from mild-mannered husband to killer. There’s nothing original about The Backwoods, but it succeeds in capturing the tension and viciousness of those 1970s Straw Dogs-ish showdowns between city slickers and slack-jawed yokels.
