Things got Wild at today’s 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations when presenters Terrence Howard and Jeanne Tripplehorn announced a whopping four Motion Picture nominations for Sean Penn’s Into the Wild.
The film, about a college graduate who leaves his life behind to live in the Alaskan wilderness, led the pack with nominations for an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Emile Hirsch, an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Hal Holbrook, an Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Catherine Keener and an Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for the ensemble.
Both Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men were a close second, receiving three nominations each--voted on by the entire Screen Actors Guild, the union of professional Hollywood performers.
Clayton, a thriller about a lawyer who cleans up after his corporate clients, scored nods for George Clooney’s Outstanding Performance By a Male Actor in a Leading Role, Tom Wilkinson’s Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role and Tilda Swinton’s Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.
The Coen brothers' brutal drama No Country nabbed a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture as well as two nods for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for both Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones.
American Gangster, Hairspray and 3:10 to Yuma rounded out the nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the Guild’s equivalent to Best Picture.
"The ensemble award I think differentiates us, that fact that we do celebrate team work," SAG president Alan Rosenberg told Hollywood.com. "I keep saying this feels more like a celebration of acting than it does a competition I think that makes us different...the other award shows always feel like a competition and everyone is so nervous. If you go to our award show everyone just seems so happy to be there and see old friends and happy to be participating in this together as a group."

Television’s Cream of the Crop
Scoring three Primetime Television nods a piece, Ugly Betty and 30 Rock both led the pack in the comedy category, while The Sopranos rose to the top on the drama side.
Ugly Betty costars America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams will go head to head for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for their roles as Betty Suarez and Wilhemina Slater in the dramedy about a misfit assistant working at Mode magazine. In addition, the cast could take home an Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
While the cast of 30 Rock is also up for the ensemble award, Alec Baldwin was "grateful to be nominated" for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series alongside costar Tina Fey who received a nomination of her own for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.
Fans were shocked when Sopranos’ James Gandolfini and Edie Falco both lost out at the Emmys earlier this year, but the onscreen couple now stands a chance at the SAG Awards for their Outstanding Performances By a Male Actor and a Female Actor in a Drama Series. The cast of the HBO hit about a New Jersey mob boss and his family is also up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
Ensemble nods also went to dramas Boston Legal, The Closer, Grey’s Anatomy and Mad Men and comedies Desperate Housewives, Entourage, and The Office.

The show must go on!
While Hollywood buzzes about the Writer’s Guild of America strike, not crossing picket lines and boycotting award shows there’s one worry-free stop on the trophy trail; The Screen Actors Guild Awards.
SAG president Alan Rosenberg (L.A. Law) says the two guilds have an interim contract that allows screenwriters to work their award show this year, giving actors a free pass to attend while staying in step with the scribes.
"It is because we’ve been marching shoulder to shoulder with the Writers Guild since the strike began," Rosenberg said of the interim contract. "Our issues are the same as their issues. We hope they arrive at their deal so we don’t have to go on strike in June. We are partners and they understand how important this award show is to the Screen Actors Guild, to our treasury to our foundation, which is where actors turn when they are in trouble."
Sans the writers, most of the award shows are at risk of cancellation and Rosenberg explained that despite the importance of all the shows he supports the writers’ cause.
"If you go to the Golden Globes or go to the Oscars it only helps your career so it is a real sacrifice not to show up," he said. "I wish we had a fair deal so we could end this strike and the shows could go on but the cause is right and I’m really proud of the Writers Guild and what they are doing. I think is heroic and I anticipate a lot of the actors will not be crossing the picket line when it comes to award shows."
The Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony airs live Jan. 27 on TNT and TBS
