What We Think:
Making its case to become this year’s Dreamgirls is Marshall’s adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Nine, which itself was inspired by italian director Frederico Fellini’s legendary art film 8 1/2.
Marshall’s formidable cast is loaded with Oscar winners, including Day-Lewis, Cruz, Cotillard, Kidman, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren. Even junior varsity castmember Kate Hudson is a Best Supporting Actress nominee.
The film’s story involves an Italian film director (Day-Lewis) who attempts to navigate a severe mid-life crisis while balancing the needs of the many demanding women in his life.
Cool to Know:
Renée Zellweger was the first choice for the role of Carla before Penélope Cruz took the role.
