Cupid Premiere
(Tuesday, Mar. 31, 2009)

Once upon a time 11 years ago, Jeremy Piven played Cupid. But oddly, he always seemed more like Cupid's Hollywood ass of an agent than the matchmaker himself. Cut to now: a new Cupid (same director, still on ABC), starring Bobby Cannavale as the new and improved Roman God of love (so huggable, too — ever see him in The Station Agent?). He stars opposite Sarah Paulson (as Claire), a blond 'n' bright psychiatrist (get it, Roman mythology geeks, Cupid and Psyche sittin' in a tree?!), and both have very opposite thoughts on amour. Cupid — or Trevor, what he's calling himself in Manhattan, where he's been sent to put 100 couples back in heat — believes that love is "passion, heat, chemistry and sex," while Claire disagrees and says that "love at first sight is a myth" and is more about mutual respect and friendship after the spark dies off. Tonight's pilot chronicle's Trevor's New Year's Eve antics, an effort to put a street musician back in the arms of his Holly but somehow winds up in singles' therapy sessions with Claire. A room full of single people? Fine by Cupid.
