Rudo y Cursi
(Friday, May 8, 2009)

Hard to believe it's been eight years since we first met bosom-buddies pair Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal deep in Y Tu Mama Tambien shenanigans. They've since become real-life fathers -- another hard-to-believe fact as Diego and Gael still appear boyish and full of antics -- and now, friendship still in tact, their Y Tu director's brother, Carlos Cuaron, invites the Spanish-crooning men on another journey. They are soccer-playing brothers, both recruited to play pro in Mexico City. Their moves on the field are rather comical, up-to-par with the slapstick banter shared between the two rivaling brothers. It's obvious that the laughs are most important here; it's quite easy to chew once and spit out the fleeting druggie topics. It's a little heartbreaking to discover that Rudo's (Luna) copious soccer earnings vanish in an instant, but Cursi's (Bernal) dream of becoming a singer kinda-sorta comes true (wait for his Spanish rendition of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me"). Rudo y Cursi, by the way, roughly translates to "tough and corny" -- both extremely fitting adjectives.
