The Unusuals Premiere
(Wednesday, Apr. 8, 2009)

Perhaps until forever, whenever we hear that a new cop drama is lurking, we'll instantly wonder: Maybe it'll replace The Wire. Maybe? Curb the wishful "McNulty + Bunk 2.0" thinking for a sec; instead, The Unusuals promises ... "zany." Zany police in Manhattan. Lives so absurd that Adam Goldberg's detective character has the balls-out capability to chase a suspect onto a subway track and despite the fact that a train is pulling in, Goldberg — because he is both God and "unusual" — makes very little effort to move out of the way. They say it's Amber Tamblyn (um, does she bring over any of her past paranormal gifts from her Joan of Arcadia days?), playing Casey Shraeger, who's the most unusual of all: a rich girl who's dismayed her parents with her desire to become a cop; she's playing a hooker before being summoned to join Jason Walsh (Jeremy Renner). Casey is both replacing his partner and investigating the murder of said partner — but, naturally, they would exchange commentary about how she is wearing a thong and he is a trained detective and thus why he figured. Jason cryptically delivers a message to Casey — who may or may not become the precinct's snitch: "Our secrets keep us sane." Sounds like we can bet that a lot of telling hush-hush is about to erupt ...
