Year One
(Friday, June 19, 2009)

Honestly, our sole reason for seeing this flick is Michael Cera. Good God, is he adorable. He's accused of being a one-note Nice Boy, but if there's just one indication that Cera is reaching outside of his comfort zone in Year One, it would be the unkempt long-hair wig. Also, the flick isn't a teen flick per se; it's of the laff variety with an endless Gross-o-Meter. Like drinking his own urine kind of gross (shhh, it's apple juice). Jack Black is his caveman cohort, and the two traipse about civilization in the first year since Jesus came aboard. Zed (Black) has indulged in some fruit off the Tree of Knowledge, and he now knows the world isn't flat. Oh (Cera) has a caveman understanding of love, partnership and reproduction, and he's got his eyes and libido on the beguiling Eema (Juno Temple, our Fresh Face pick of the week). Amidst Zed and Oh's evolutionary epiphanies, they encounter Cain (David Cross), his unlucky brother (Paul Rudd), Abraham (Hank Azaria) and Abe's son Isaac (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, aka McLovin). What better men to bump into whilst wearing loin cloths?
