One thing for sure, Gossip Girl doesn’t shrink from the hard topics. In the past few weeks, we’ve had teenage suicide, adult drug addiction, corporate embezzlement, the effects of marital infidelity on children, and finally: the return of the gay daddy.

Yup, Harold’s back.

Blair’s estranged father, who was off in Paris having an affair with a male model, has come home for the holidays--male model in tow.

Besides being proof that the Upper East Side is no shelter from the silly season, this was a fairly nice handling of an idea that could have gone horribly wrong.

Sure, Ramon (William Abadie), the gay and oddly-coiffed boyfriend is one lisp shy of a stereotype, but it seems like Harold likes those qualities in a man.

And yes Blair’s attempts to win her father back from his new lover became what happens when Less Than Zero meets the Ice Capades, but you’ve got to appreciate the line: “We’ve been friends since before Marc Jacobs went to rehab.”

On other fronts: Rufus finally figures out Alison’s been trying to have her cake and eat it, too. Turns out Alex--the neighbor from her supposed one-night stand--is still in the picture.

And, oddly, Rufus was damn calm about the whole thing. So maybe no one yells in Brooklyn anymore or maybe Lilly’s not going to accept that marriage proposal and instead decide to start slumming with her daughter.

Speaking of her daughter: Serena and Dan finally have sex for the first time. Or did they?

Maybe I missed something because I swear they had sex for the first time a few weeks ago. I do know that the Catholic Church “restores” virginity to become prospective nuns after seven years of abstinence--maybe the process just works quicker in New York.
