'The Dark Knight Rises' Infographic: What's Batman Thinking?

Here's a testament to The Dark Knight Rises: Even one and a half weeks later, we're still thinking about it. Whether it's debating the blockbuster's crazy ending, juggling its political overtones, mulling over where the story goes now or predicting director Christopher Nolan's Oscar chances, TDKR is (and will probably be for the rest of 2012) a hot topic. 'The Dark Knight Rises' Oscar Potential: Is It a Best Picture Contender?

In 2008, a Best Picture nomination for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight looked like a sure thing. Though "popcorn cinema" didn't have a track record for nabbing spots on the list — between 1999 and '08, only The Sixth Sense and the Lord of the Rings trilogy stood out as both "prestige" and blockbuster fare — many considered Nolan's second Batman movie to be the real deal. Amazing visuals, poignant themes, a standout performance by the late Heath Ledger, and rave reviews across the board were the perfect awards equation. Read more

Politics of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’: Is Batman of the One Percent or the 99?

When Christopher Nolan decided to take the filming of his final Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, to downtown Manhattan in late 2011, he opened Pandora’s Box. At that moment, the location was synonymous with one of the biggest grassroots movements our country has seen in the last decade: Occupy Wall Street. Read more

Burt Ward on Robin: What It Takes to Bring Batman's Sidekick to Life

Actor Burt Ward loves his timeless superhero character Robin. But even more so, he loves the fans who love Robin. "People come up to me and they say, 'We like the Batman movies, but we like what you did with Batman much better.' And in fact, when Adam is speaking to the crowd, he says, 'You know, when you go the movie theaters you see the Dark Knight. But with Burt and me… we’re the Bright Knights.' Read more

Batman Beyond: 'Dark Knight Rises' and Rebooting the Caped Crusader

A surprising truth: Batman Begins, 2005's $150 million comic book reboot of the famed Caped Crusader, only grossed $205 million at the domestic box office. That's a meager amount in terms of Hollywood blockbusters — for comparison, the movie was eventually outgrossed by the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers. But director Christopher Nolan's visionary approach to the comic book property wowed the audiences who took it in, and the film earned more and more respect over time. Eventually, every franchise wanted to get the Batman Begins treatment. Read more

Casting the Batman Villains We Didn't See

We got a pretty good deal out of Christopher Nolan's Batman series. Fans were treated to some of The Dark Knight's most iconic villains: The Joker, Catwoman, Two-Face, Ra's al Ghul, The Scarecrow, and Bane. A good list. But not a complete list. Read more

'The Dark Knight Rises' Ending and When Fan Service Attacks

Fan service: the most delicate of comic book movie moments. When crafting an adaptation of a well-known property — be it a comic book, old film or anything remotely founded in pop culture knowledge — the balance between reinvention and homage is always tricky. Do you make the film for the invested fan base with the potential of leaving the uninitiated in the dust, or do you broaden the scope, scrap the geeky details that made it popular in the first place in hopes of hooking a larger audience? Why Anne Hathaway's Catwoman Is the Best One Yet

There’s no such thing as the purrrrfect Catwoman. The character’s background, dating back to her origins on television on the 1960s series Batman as well as her appearances in the comics run the gamut from wiley adversary to a whiney ex-lover who calls Bruce Wayne just to say “Bruce, I’m lonley” in Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Midnight Screening Culture: What Happens Now?

This is not the story I was going to write this morning. The Evolution of the Batmobile

The Batmobile. Yep, pretty much the coolest concept car ever dreamed up. 'Dark Knight Rises' Soundtrack Now Streaming — And We've Broken It Down

Much like the movies themselves, Hans Zimmer's scores for Christopher Nolan's Batman films have pushed the envelope of blockbuster standards. Grand, dynamic, and surprisingly minimalist, the tracks that fill Batman Begins and The Dark Knight range from comic book beat-'em-up thrill rides, to emotionally devastating dirges, to white noise symphonies (only the clout of Nolan could get away with the Joker's theme "Why So Serious?"). We don’t know exactly how the plot will play out in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming third Batman installment, but cobbling together the images from the trailers as well as what we know about the Knightfall storyline from which the film is seemingly drawing inspiration (entire scenes from that comic arc can be seen in the trailers) the prescience of Rocky III in this regard cannot be overlooked.
