Get a sneak peek into the year 2233 (and beyond!) with these 15 things the new Star Trek teaches us …
1. Kirk's mom's pregnancy guidebook, What to Expect When You're Expecting, didn't cover the circumstances under which she goes into labor.
2. No more sleepless nights trying to remember what the "T" in James T. Kirk stands for.
3. The skin color of young Uhura's roommate at the space academy proves that prejudice will be loooong gone 200 years from now. Either that or humans will begin mating with Astroturf.
4. The manner in which the rowdy young Kirk is smuggled aboard the Enterprise on its maiden flight tells us security will still be lax whenever the script calls for it, no matter what year it is.
5. No matter how many futuristic gizmos there are to dispatch your enemies, it will still be understood that there's nothing quite like a real fist fight — preferably in a setting that's easy to slip off of. Said slipper will catch him or herself in the nick of time, of course.
6. They say that when a young Starfleet recruit heads out to protect the Federation, he finds out what he's made of. Kirk, for example, is made out of something completely indestructible.
7. Winona Ryder could play your mother — she plays Spock's.
8. Spock and his really sexy girlfriend only exchange G-rated kisses. Perhaps, in the future, G-rated kisses are unbearably erotic. Maybe?
9. The expression "You know the drill" will take on far more ominous meaning.
10. No matter how much progress humanity and non-humanity make, blowing stuff up will still come in really handy.
11. The Romulans aren't unclear on whether waterboarding is "torture" or not. It's torture — that's why they use it.
12. The young Chekov would love that old joke where the answer is "9-W," and the question is: "Do you spell your name with a 'V' Herr Wagner?"
13. If you're as daring as Kirk or as smart as Spock, there's an argument here in favor of cheating that you might be able to pull on a boss or teacher. But only if you're as daring as Kirk or as smart as
Spock.
14. Leonard Nimoy is in the cast. You'll be so busy watching the movie that you'll forget, then be absolutely thrilled to see him when he is truly least expected.
15. Nobody says "Beam me up, Scotty" much — he just knows it's his job. But when he's older, on the TV show, they'll have to keep reminding him.
