10 Things That Will Get You On ‘American Idol’

Andrew Fenlon, a contestant in Boston during Season 9, chose to get testy with the judges by bursting into the room, complaining about being kept waiting all day. Then-judge Kara Dioguardi was miffed by Fenlon's cavalier attitude towards getting his shot, and while it guaranteed him a spot on TV, it also earned him three no's. At least he got Simon's vote.

This one certainly put us through the ringer. In Season 10, we met Chris Medina, a sweet singer with a heartbreaking past. His fiance sustained brain damage after a terrible accident and he stayed by her side, vowing to take care of her for the rest of her life. It made us misty, and it made for the classic 'Idol' audition episode finale.

During the Season 8 auditions, Ben Haar surprised everyone when he literally disrobed and revealed his claim to fame: a Princess Leia slave bikini. Classy doesn't always win the race we suppose.

What would the Idol audition process be without William Hung and "She Bangs"? In Season 3 he epitomized the role of the exploited auditioner, used to bring in flabbergasted viewers and little else. But at least Hung showed everyone when he wound up releasing an album and making various appearances flanked by cute dancers.

This tactic certainly worked for Season 9's Casey James, who ended up shirtless thanks to Kara Dioguardi's fawning. Of course, it works for the ladies too. Season 11's Shannon Magrane was similarly heckled by Steven Tyler and she made it all the way to the top 11.

Make Us Laugh Out Loud... On Purpose

Season 6 contestant Chris Sligh made us belly laugh... intentionally. (I know, that never happens on 'Idol.') Before commencing his audition, Sligh proclaimed that his goal was to "make David Hasselhoff cry." Only the most stone cold television producer could ignore a gem like that. (Photo Credit: INF)

Heejun Han was in a league all his own during Season 10. The smooth singer was alright when it came to vocals, but he made up for it with his never-ending wit, which he greatly used as a weapon against the dud that was Richie Law, the cowboy.

Nudity Is Always a Good Bet

Nudity (or near nudity) will get you almost anywhere on a reality show, but if you take a page out of Season 8 contestant Katrina Durrell's (a.k.a. Bikini Girl) playbook and you could find yourself in a battle with one of the women on the panel, like then-judge Kara Dioguardi. Then, not only will you show up on TV, you'll be an instant internet celebrity.

Be General Larry Platt

There is no equivalent to this elderly gent who sneaked past the age limits during Season 9 to sing his original grandpa anthem "Pants on the Ground." You're looking like a fool with your pants on the ground, and he's looking like a fool singing that song on 'Idol.'

Be Amazing

Oh yeah, that helps too. When all else fails, ditch the crazy costumes and weird one-liners and just blow the judges' socks off like Carrie Underwood did in Season 4. Then you'll get yourself on 'Idol' for a whole season, and maybe even on the stage of an arena for the rest of your life. But let's not get carried away...
