Pick a Fight With a Judge
Andrew Fenlon, a contestant in Boston during Season 9, chose to get testy with the judges by bursting into the room, complaining about being kept waiting all day. Then-judge Kara Dioguardi was miffed by Fenlon's cavalier attitude towards getting his shot, and while it guaranteed him a spot on TV, it also earned him three no's. At least he got Simon's vote.
Make Us Cry Crocodile Tears
This one certainly put us through the ringer. In Season 10, we met Chris Medina, a sweet singer with a heartbreaking past. His fiance sustained brain damage after a terrible accident and he stayed by her side, vowing to take care of her for the rest of her life. It made us misty, and it made for the classic 'Idol' audition episode finale.
Have a Fondness For Sci-Fi Costumes

Be Wildly Overconfident
What would the Idol audition process be without William Hung and "She Bangs"? In Season 3 he epitomized the role of the exploited auditioner, used to bring in flabbergasted viewers and little else. But at least Hung showed everyone when he wound up releasing an album and making various appearances flanked by cute dancers.
Be Too Hot To Handle
This tactic certainly worked for Season 9's Casey James, who ended up shirtless thanks to Kara Dioguardi's fawning. Of course, it works for the ladies too. Season 11's Shannon Magrane was similarly heckled by Steven Tyler and she made it all the way to the top 11.
