24: Legacy producers sorry for Kenya mall attack footage

The producers of new TV drama 24: Legacy have issued a formal apology after using real-life CCTV footage from a 2013 terror attack in Kenya for the revamped action series.
A recent episode of the new 24 show, which aired in the U.S. on Monday (20Feb17), featured a storyline about the mastermind behind a fictionalised incident in Egypt three years ago.
It has since emerged the surveillance clips used in the show to depict the Egyptian shooting were actually from news coverage of the deadly 2013 massacre at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, where a group of militants opened fire, killing 67 people and leaving more than 175 others injured.
It’s not known why producers chose to include it in the series, but 24: Legacy creators Evan Katz and Manny Coto have expressed their apologies for the insensitive decision.
In a statement, they write: “We regretfully included news footage of an attack in Nairobi. It will be removed from all future broadcasts and versions of the show.”
Show bosses have also apologised “for any pain caused to the victims and their families”.
24: Legacy, a spin-off of Kiefer Sutherland’s hit show, stars Straight Outta Compton actor Corey Hawkins. It debuted in the U.S. after the Super Bowl earlier this month (Feb17).
