Aboriginal author Doris Pilkington Garimara dies

Aboriginal author Doris Pilkington Garimara has died at the age of 76. The writer passed away following a battle with ovarian cancer on 10 April (14) in Perth, Australia.
Pilkington Garimara is best known for her 1996 novel, Follow the Rabbit Proof Fence, a story about her mother, who was taken away from her family in the 1930s and sent to a government “re-education camp” Down Under.
The heart-wrenching tale recalls her mum’s escape and the nine weeks she spent braving the Outback to return to her home.
The book was adapted into a film titled Rabbit Proof Fence in 2002, starring Sir Kenneth Branagh.
