Actor R.G. Armstrong dies

The Dick Tracy star passed away on Sunday (29Jul12) at his home in Studio City, California of natural causes.

Armstrong – full name Robert Golden Armstrong, Jr. – started his career in the theatre and starred in the original 1955 Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He went on to pursue a career on the small screen, landing a series of roles in Westerns including Have Gun – Will Travel, Rawhide, Bonanza and Gunsmoke.

He met Sam Peckinpah on the set of The Westerner and the filmmaker went on to cast him in movie Westerns such as Ride the High Country, Major Dundee, The Ballad of Cable Hogue and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid.

Armstrong also appeared in three of Warren Beatty’s films, Heaven Can Wait, Reds and Dick Tracy, playing villain Pruneface, while he also enjoyed roles in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Predator and opposite Mel Gibson in Payback.
