Actress Michelle Hurst recovering from car crash coma

Actress Michelle Hurst is recovering from a coma after a pre-Christmas car crash. Doctors placed the Orange is the New Black star, who also appeared in films Stepmom and Smoke, in a medically-induced coma after she was admitted to hospital in North Carolina last month (Dec13).
A fundraising page on YouCaring.com has been launched to help the actress’ sister cover her medical costs.
A post on the site reads: “Michelle Hurst was in a bad car accident just before the holidays. She had major injuries so the doctors put her in a medically induced coma to avoid movement while they did multiple surgeries near her spine. She is out of the coma (after 16 days) and has opened her eyes!”
Her co-stars on the show have been directing fans to the fundraising website, with actress Natasha Lyonne tweeting, “Please give what you can to help Michelle Hurst – the amazing actress who plays Ms. Claudette on OITNB.”
Hurst remains in the intensive care unit at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Hospital.
