Adam Clayton credits U2 bandmates for helping him beat alcohol addiction

Adam Clayton gave a frank and heartfelt speech praising his U2 bandmates for their support as he struggled with addiction.
Adam, who has been a member of U2 for over four decades, received the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his support of the MusiCares MAP Fund, which offers musicians access to addiction recovery treatment.
In his acceptance speech he thanked his bandmates for their continuous support during his treatment and recovery for alcohol abuse before joining them on stage to perform some of their hits.
“We have a pact with each other,” Clayton told the audience, reported Billboard. “In our band, no one will be a casualty. We all come home, or none of us come home. No one will be left behind. Thank you for honouring that promise, and letting me be in your band.”
Adam sought help for his alcohol addiction when musician Eric Clapton convinced him to check into rehab in the nineties.
“Didn’t think you could be in a band and not drink. It is so much a part of our culture,” he confessed. “I was lucky because I had three friends who could see what was going on and who loved me enough to take up the slack of my failing.
“Bono,The Edge, and Larry (Mullen) truly supported me before and after I entered recovery, and I am unreservedly grateful for their friendship, understanding and support.”
He ended his speech by quoting lyrics from the band’s track I Will Follow and then joined the rest of U2 to perform the song as well as tracks Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of, and Vertigo.
Musician Michael Franti, Jack Garratt, reggae singer Chronixx, Macy Gray, and The Lumineers, all performed at the show held at the PlayStation Theater in Times Square.
U2 are currently in the middle of The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 World Tour.
