Alec Baldwin said his three-year-old daughter hates it when he gets praise from adoring fans in public.
The 59-year-old appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday (18Apr17) and described how he is more popular than ever thanks to his infamous impersonation on comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live (SNL) of President Donald Trump.
“It’s been amazing. It’s eerie, actually. I think, more than anything I’ve ever done, people come up to me and say something on the streets,” Baldwin explained, revealing how he is approached by people who want to thank him for lampooning the controversial president while out and about in New York.
However, there is one person who isn’t impressed with Baldwin’s newfound popularity. “My daughter Carmen, she’s three-and-a-half, and I call her the reincarnation of Elaine Stritch (the late American actress, renowned for her deadpan wit and frankness).
“People will walk up to me and (wife) Hilaria will be putting Carmen in her stroller, and someone will walk up to me very quietly and go, ‘Thank you, thank you!’ And Carmen will look at them and say, ‘I don’t like you!’ Like, ‘Enough of this slapping my dad on the back and congratulating him. Go away!'” Baldwin laughed.
The Beetlejuice star also revealed he initially turned down playing Trump on SNL but was on board once a movie had fallen through. And Baldwin said it was an exhausting process trying to perfect his impression.
“It’s totally a caricature,” he said. “You just pick a few things. Left eyebrow up, right eyebrow down. Shove your face out like you’re trying to suck the chrome off of the fender of a car.”
The 30 Rock actor may be enjoying his popular stint on the comedy sketch show, but his wife makes sure he keeps his feet firmly on the ground.
“My wife has a line, it’s a wonderful line. If I’m whining, kvetching (complaining) about something, my wife will turn to me and she’ll say, ‘Nobody feels sorry for Alec Baldwin‘,” he told Gothamist magazine recently. “She’ll turn literally to anybody on the street corner, ‘Do you feel sorry for Alec Baldwin? Anyone? Anyone?’”
