Allison Janney worried about breaking Golden Globes gown all-black dress code

Allison Janney was scared her beaded Mario Dice gown went against the unofficial all-black dress code at the 2018 Golden Globes.

Hollywood stars opted to wear only black ensembles to the awards show in January, in support of the anti-sexual harassment movement Time’s Up, though the decision came last minute – leaving stylists scrambling around to find black dresses for their famous clients.

Allison, who picked up the Best Supporting Actress prize for I, Tonya, wowed in an intricate gown from Mario Dice which featured a cut-out butterfly design, but her stylist Tara Swennen has revealed the 59-year-old wasn’t sure at first.

“It was more pressure, and there were more things to consider than just what’s the prettiest dress,” stylist Ilaria Urbinati said of the black dress code during a round table chat for The Hollywood Reporter.

“It was a decision that was made very late in the game,” Tara noted. “Allison Janney’s Mario Dice dress had a little white beading, and she was very fearful. In the end, I said that I didn’t want that to impede our creativity. So we did it, and it was one thing that set her apart at the Globes.”

There was also a lot of confusion about how stars were going to represent the Time’s Up message, which was created in response to the sexual harassment and assault claims that swept Hollywood at the end of 2017.

Stylist Jason Bolden, who worked with director Ava DuVernay, recalled how the filmmaker had heard rumours that women were forgoing make-up for the glitzy event.

“My client Ava DuVernay said she heard no make-up, no jewellery. Then I looked at her and said, ‘We’re wearing make-up and jewellery’,” he shared. “It boiled down to the battle of the best black dress.”
