Andy Samberg has long been viewed as a visage of pure, unadulterated silliness. In other words, he’s an American hero. So that’s why it pains many of us to hear news like this: Samberg and NBC have recently been hit with a copyright lawsuit regarding the music behind two of Samberg’s popular Saturday Night Live skits, “Shy Ronnie,” featuring Rihanna, and “Like a Boss.”
Aleric Banks and Monique Hines, who make up a production team based out of St. Louis, are claiming that Samberg utilized their original music for aforementioned skits. According to the plaintiffs, they had been in contact with Samberg for some time, hoping to form a collaboration. The two songs in question were among the musical pieces that Banks and Hines submitted to Samberg. However, they never received any credit for alleged contribution on either “Shy Ronnie,” which was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, or “Like a Boss.”
You can watch both videos below. “Shy Ronnie” stars Samberg and Rihanna, and “Like a Boss” stars Samberg and Seth Rogen. Both skits were written (the lyrics were, at least) by the Lonely Island comedy team, which consists of Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone.
