Andy Warhol works sell for $100 million

Two works by iconic pop artist Andy Warhol have gone under the hammer for a combined price of $100 million (£62.5 million). White Marilyn, a painting of Marilyn Monroe completed shortly before her death in 1962, raised $41 million (£25.6 million) at Christie’s auction house in New York City, while 1964’s Race Riot sold for $62.9 million (£39.3 million).
The pieces were part of a record-breaking auction on Tuesday night (13May14) when a selection of contemporary art brought in a massive $744 million (£465 million), the highest ever total for a single sale.
Brett Gorvy, Christie’s head of post-war art, says, “Well we’ve actually made history tonight. It was a momentous evening.”
