Andy Williams art collection brings in $46 million on auction’s first day

A two-day sale of late crooner Andy Williams’ vast art collection has smashed estimates by raising $46 million (£29 million) at the first auction. The Moon River hitmaker’s pieces, which include works by Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Pablo Picasso, went under the hammer during the sale’s first auction at Christie’s in New York on Wednesday (15May13).
The collection was expected to fetch $30 million (£19 million) altogether, but the first day of selling went $14 million (£9 million) over target.
The second leg of the sale will happen later this week (begs13May13).
Williams passed away last year (12) at the age of 84.
