The abstract work, Stranger #44 by Glenn Ligon, was estimated to fetch between $150,000 to $200,000 (£94,000 to £125,000) but Aniston and Theroux bid big at the Christie’s auction in New York.
They set a new sales record for a painting by the American conceptual artist.
Aniston’s pal Ben Stiller helped organise the Artists for Haiti fundraiser, which pulled in $13.6 million (£8.5 million) for health and education initiatives in the earthquake-ravaged Caribbean country.
