Annette Bening was left speechless when an unnamed actor slipped her the tongue during a kissing scene early in her career.
The actress was shocked and stunned when her co-star took advantage of her when she signed on to play his girlfriend for an episode of a TV show.
Speaking to students at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & TV as part of a The Hollywood Reporter Hollywood Masters interview, Bening recalled, “I can’t remember the name of it now. I’m brought in and I’m the bad guy’s girlfriend, and I’m standing there in lingerie and the bad guy is supposed to kiss me.”
“And the guy that did it grabbed me and put his tongue down my throat.”
Calling it “vile” and “unnecessary”, the actress added, “He was taking advantage of the moment. And at the moment I was brand new… I’d never worked on camera. I wasn’t a child – I was in my 20s – but I was so shocked and I didn’t quite know what to do. I didn’t know how to handle it.”
“No one said anything. No man on the set, no one said, ‘Hey, that’s not cool, don’t do that to her’. And I didn’t stand up for myself.”
The American Beauty star insists she’s much more of a tough feminist these days and would not tolerate such bad behaviour on set.
“I’m courteous if I disagree with something or I want to add something or I want to ask a question or contribute in some way,” she said. “But I’m much more likely to speak up now than I would have been.”
