Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Returning to Comedy With Star-Studded ‘SNL’ Movie

Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to star in comedian Taran Killam’s directorial debut Why We’re Killing Gunther.

The action hero will lead the comedy as title character Gunther, the world’s greatest hitman, who is annoying the assassin community by showing off and being arrogant. The group team up to take Gunther down but he is always one step ahead.

The project has been written by Taran, who has been a Saturday Night Live regular since 2010. He will also direct his SNL co-stars Bobby Moynihan and Paul Brittain, and his wife, former How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders, in his debut feature.

Kumail Nanjiani from TV show Silicon Valley, The Interview‘s Randall Park and Ryan Gaul, from TV series House of Lies will also star.

Bosses from production company MadRiver Pictures are taking to the project to the Cannes Film Festival in France in search for potential buyers ahead of a reported June (16) film shoot date. The festival begins on 11 May (16).

The film will mark Arnold’s return to comedy movies after 1990s family hits Jingle All The Way, Junior and Kindergarten Cop. In recent years he has been in more serious films such as Escape Plan, The Expendables and Terminator Genisys.

He recently finished filming drama 478 about a man who seeks revenge on an air traffic controller who made a mistake which caused a plane crash, killing his character’s wife and daughter. It has also been announced the former bodybuilder will reprise his 1980’s Conan the Barbarian role for The Legend of Conan, while a sequel to his 1988 comedy Twins is also in the works.

Taran and Cobie have been married since 2012 and have two children.
