Barbra Streisand to receive honorary doctorate in Israel

Veteran entertainer Barbra Streisand will be presented with an honorary doctorate in Israel next month (Jun13), when she will make her first ever performance in the country. The Funny Girl singer/actress is booked to play three shows there, including a set at the Israeli Presidential Conference to celebrate the 90th birthday of leader Shimon Peres, and she will take time out of her busy schedule to attend a special ceremony at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on 17 June (13).
School officials have revealed the superstar will be recognised for “her professional achievements, outstanding humanitarianism, leadership in the realm of human and civil rights, and dedication to Israel and the Jewish people”.
Hebrew University President Menahem Ben-Sasson says, “Barbra Streisand’s transcendent talent is matched by her passionate concern for equality and opportunity for people of every gender and background. Equally important, her love of Israel and her Jewish heritage are reflected in so many aspects of her life and career.”
The 71 year old, who also holds an honorary PhD from America’s Brandeis University, is no stranger to Hebrew University bosses – she established the Emanuel Streisand Building for Jewish Studies, in memory of her late father, on the school’s Mount Scopus campus in 1984.
