Barry Jenkins takes selfies with portraits of Warren Beatty

Barry Jenkins always takes a selfie whenever he sees a portrait of Warren Beatty.

At the Academy Awards in 2017, Beatty mistakenly read out La La Land as the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, when the honor was actually meant to go to Jenkins‘ coming-of-age drama Moonlight.
While Jenkins is well and truly over the debacle, he shared during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night (17Dec18) that he now sees the Dick Tracy actor’s image wherever he travels in the world.

“You know, sometimes when something happens and you didn’t think of that thing and now you see it everywhere? I see Warren Beatty everywhere. No lie,” he smiled. “(I’m) not haunted, because Warren is one of my best memories from that night, but I’ll literally be in France and there will be a portrait of Warren Beatty. And whenever that happens, whenever I see his portrait, I take a selfie with it.”

Jenkins is currently promoting his new film If Beale Street Could Talk, which is based on James Baldwin’s novel of the same name, and features KiKi Layne and Stephan James. The movie is receiving Oscar buzz, and while the filmmaker brushed off the speculation, he did share that he would like to see Oprah Winfrey host the 2019 ceremony in February (19) after Kevin Hart stepped down from the position after facing backlash over a series of derogatory Twitter messages he posted between 2009 and 2011.

“I think Oprah would be an amazing host for the Oscars…. it would be amazing,” the 39-year-old added.
