BBC prepares to defend itself

The BBC is bracing for a storm of criticism when it begins airing a new miniseries starting May 27 in which a serial killer who believes he is Christ brutally murders a number of men bearing the names of the 12 apostles. Thursday’s London Daily Mirror quoted a senior BBC source as saying, “We are well aware that some people may feel the subject matter to be offensive and inappropriate. But we make no apologies. Messiah is a superb production which we believe will grip millions. It’s not cozy. It’s not nice. Mary Whitehouse [founder of the National Viewers and Listeners’ Association, a private TV watchdog group] won’t like it. But it is brilliant television.”
