Sunday night’s (12Aug12) grand finale has now been overshadowed by the news that Nadzeya Ostapchuk has been told she has to return her medal.
Valerie Adams of New Zealand has now been awarded the gold and bronze medallist Evgeniia Kolodko of Russia has been handed the silver.
Reports suggest Ostapchuk tested positive for the steroid metenolone.
A statement from the International Olympics Committee reads: “The (Olympic committee) of Belarus is ordered to return to the IOC, as soon as possible, the medal, diploma and medallist pin awarded to the athlete in relation to the above-noted event.”
Besides Ostapchuk, only one athlete tested positive for a banned substance during the otherwise ‘clean’ Games – tests found traces of marijuana in urine samples given by U.S. team judo competitor Nick Delpopolo, and he was disqualified.
