Scottish comedian Billy Connolly revealed he suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of his father in an interview with the British paper Observer on Sunday.
The 59-year old comedian said he only told his wife of the abuse he suffered after his father William died in 1989.
“I have no lack of love for my father. I love his memory now, as much as I loved him when he was alive,” Connolly told the paper.
Connolly has sought therapy–following a suggestion from his wife, Pamela Stephenson–that also helped him overcome his drinking and drug addiction problems.
Connolly and his elder sister were raised in poverty by his father and two aunts after their mother left the house when they were three. He would sleep in the sofa with his father, who would frequently come home drunk.
“It was disloyal of him to do that to me,” Connolly said.
