The When Harry Met Sally… star gave residents of Long Beach, New York a preview of the film earlier this month (Dec12) and Crystal admits he organised the event to give back to the community, which was hard hit by the disaster in October (12).
The actor was appalled to see the devastation in his hometown and reveals he just wanted to do something to help.
He tells the New York Daily News, “It was very emotional. I was born in New York City, lived in the Bronx for three or four years, but Long Beach was my hometown. It was like seeing somebody you love get beaten up, so I had this idea. The theatre is demolished but the city of Lynbrook opened its arms and we had 2,500 people come on buses to the theatre there. It was really something. I haven’t lived in Long Beach since 1976, but in a way, I never left. I’ll do whatever I can to help that town back up on its feet.”
