Bjork dreamed of radio DJ stardom as a child

Bjork’s biggest childhood ambition was to become a radio DJ rather than releasing her own music.
The eccentric Icelandic singer was just 12 years old when she released her self-titled debut record in 1977, having been talent spotted at a school recital.
Despite learning to play the piano and flute a young age, the 51-year-old tells BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne that she initially imagined she’d play other people’s music on the radio rather than become an artist herself.
“I kind of thought actually I would be doing your job,” she reveals. “I was fantasising when I was a kid I would play music, I’m kind of a suppressed music teacher, and I wanted to have a radio show where I would tell people about music they hadn’t heard.”
On Lauren’s show, which airs on Tuesday (21Nov17), Bjork’s birthday, the Play Dead singer was given the chance to act as a DJ and choose songs from some of her top artists.
One of the acts the musician championed was Rihanna, who she dubbed “the best” and treated listeners to the R&B superstar’s 2016 track James Joint.
American singer-songwriter Kelela, British transgender musician Anohni and Swiss composer Jurg Frey are also among her favourites.
And the singer adds she loves “working with kids” and is delighted lessons based on her 2011 album Biophilia are taught in European schools, including in her native Iceland.
