Black Panther hunts down Red Sparrow to retain U.K. box office crown

Black Panther has fought off a challenge from spy thriller Red Sparrow to retain its position at the top of the U.K. box office.

The Marvel blockbuster, which stars Chadwick Boseman as the superhero leader of an isolated African kingdom, continued its huge success in Britain, earning $5.2 million in cinemas last weekend (02-04Mar18).

The movie has now taken more than $48.7 million in the U.K. and almost $900 million worldwide after just three weeks in theaters.

Black Panther’s ticket sales now look set to surpass the $51.5 million figure made by recent superhero blockbusters Captain America: Civil War, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Debuting at two is Jennifer Lawrence’s Russian spy thriller Red Sparrow, which opened with $2.5 million, putting it ahead of movie musical The Greatest Showman, which made $1.7 million.

Another new entry, Game Night, a comedy thriller starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, came in at four with $1.4 million.

Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age comedy Lady Bird, which came away empty-handed from Sunday’s Oscars, despite earning five nominations, completes the top five with $1.3 million.
