Movie producer Bob Weinstein has slammed his brother Harvey as a “very sick man”, calling him a “world class liar” as he tries to cover up allegations of sexual abuse and harassment.
Harvey Weinstein lost his job at The Weinstein Company, the production firm the siblings co-founded in 2005, on Sunday (08Oct17), three days after a New York Times expose uncovered decades of allegations about his serial bad behavior, with accusers including actress Ashley Judd.
His reputation suffered further damage on Tuesday (10Oct17), after Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow added their names to the list of women who recalled unsavory encounters with Harvey early on in their careers, while Italian actress Asia Argento told the New Yorker the 65-year-old had forced himself upon her at a hotel in France 20 years ago.
Harvey has apologized for particular aspects of his past behavior, but has so far denied accusations of sexual assault or rape.
Reports suggest he is also planning to challenge his dismissal from The Weinstein Company by taking board members, including Bob, to court. But his younger brother insists it’s time Harvey accepted he only has himself to blame for his fall from grace.
“My brother Harvey is obviously a very sick man,” reads a statement Bob, 62, issued to TMZ.com. “I’ve urged him to seek immediate professional help because he is in dire need of it.
“His remorse and apologies to the victims of his abuse are hollow. He has proven himself to be a world class liar and now rather than seeking help, he is looking to blame others… I pray he gets the help that he needs.”
Meanwhile, Bob and his fellow board members at TWC have issued a joint statement in light of the latest allegations made against Harvey.
“The Weinstein Company’s Board of Representatives – Bob Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar – are shocked and dismayed by the recently emerged allegations of extreme sexual misconduct and sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein.
“These alleged actions are antithetical to human decency. These allegations come as an utter surprise to the Board. Any suggestion that the Board had knowledge of this conduct is false.”
Harvey has yet to respond to the statements. The disgraced producer, who has also separated from his designer wife Georgina Chapman, has since reportedly headed to Europe to receive treatment for sex addiction.
