Boxing legend Ken Norton dies

Former U.S. boxing champion Ken Norton has died. He was 70. The heavyweight fighter passed away at a care facility in Las Vegas on Wednesday (18Sep13) following a series of strokes.
His manager Gene Kilroy says, “I’m sure he’s in heaven now with all the great fighters. I’d like to hear that conversation.”
Beginning his career in the ring during his time in the U.S. Marines, Norton began to fight professionally in 1967.
One of his most famous bouts came in 1973, when he broke Muhammad Ali’s jaw. They met again in 1976 in New York, when Ali won the heavyweight title following a controversial decision.
Norton won a title again in 1977. After he retired, he went on to make a string of film appearances, as well as cameos in TV shows such as The A-Team and Knight Rider, and worked as a fighting pundit.
Paying tribute to the late sports star, fellow former heavyweight Mike Tyson took to Twitter.com, writing, “Today a great man passed away. A legend in the boxing world and a good man. Condolences to Ken Norton’s family on this very sad day.
“Ken Norton was always nice to me even when I was just an amateur fighter. He always treated me like I was somebody. Remarkable man.”
Norton is survived by his five children.
