Boy George discovers his great uncle was executed for treason

Pop star Boy George has discovered his uncle was executed for his part in a planned 1921 attack on a police vehicle in Dublin, Ireland.
The Culture Club leader returned to his ancestral homeland to track down information about his family tree as part of a new episode of genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are? and was shocked to learn his relative Thomas Bryan, an active member of the Irish Republican Army, was charged with treason, executed at Mountjoy Prison, and buried in an unmarked grave.
Bryan was just 23 when he gave up his life.
“I’m proud and I’m sad,” George said. “I think that is the best way to describe how I feel.
“It’s amazing to think that my great aunt married Thomas Bryan and within four months he is arrested on very serious charges and is in prison. Her future must have been so uncertain at that point, but I imagine she knew what she was getting involved in.
“Maybe that is what attracted her to Thomas? His passion… He was a very handsome man.”
George, who was born in London to Irish parents, admitted he was stunned that no one in his family had ever told him about his Uncle Thomas’ actions and death: “It’s amazing to discover that this is part of my family history…,” the singer added. “It’s such an incredible story and (I’m) mad that no one has ever talked about it. They will now, I will make sure they do.”
