Brandi Carlile launches all-female Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival in Mexico

Country star Brandi Carlile has recruited a string of famous friends for the inaugural Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival, which is set for 2019 in Mexico.
Maren Morris, the Indigo Girls, Patty Griffin, KT Tunstall, and Margo Price will join Brandi on the all-female bill, which the By the Way, I Forgive You singer crafted to show concert bookers that more women should feature on festival line-ups.
“What I really want is for the festival to do so well that people will see it who are booking them, and understand that there is a demand for women,” she tells Rolling Stone Country. “And I want other women to mirror the template at home, from a club level on. Get a group of women together, mirror the concept and do it for the next couple of years until it changes. I’m ready to get in the trenches and prove those bookers wrong.”
She reveals she first came up with the idea for the Girls Just Wanna Weekend after spotting a BookMoreWomen tweet, which blacked out all the males on the bills at top festivals.
“When I first saw those posters with the men’s names removed, they just looked so weird,” she adds. “I’m always travelling and familiar with all of these festivals, and I play them, so I’m definitely part of the problem. But there absolutely needs to be more women included, particularly at the top of those posters.”
