Brian May: ‘I haven’t earned a penny from Bohemian Rhapsody biopic’

Brian May has yet to see a penny from hit movie Bohemian Rhapsody.

The guitarist is tickled when people think he and bandmate Roger Taylor made a fortune from the Queen biopic, starring Oscar winner Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, because nothing could be further from the truth.

Despite the fact the film is the highest-grossing music biopic in history, May is still waiting to get a piece of the action, financially.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, May said, “We thought it would do well in the end and we felt good about it, but we didn’t realize it would do that well. It’s incredible around the world – it’s like a billion-dollar movie.

“But I had to laugh the other day because there’s a thing in the paper saying that we were getting rich off this movie. If they only knew. We had an accountant in the other day and we still haven’t earned a penny from it.”

“Isn’t that funny? How successful does a movie have to be before you make money? There’s so many people that people don’t realize will take pieces off the top.”

A sequel is in the pipeline, according to Rudi Dolezal, who directed several of Queen’s videos. He insists there are plans to pick-up Mercury’s life after the group’s Live Aid reunion in 1985 to his death in 1991.
