Britain’s Prince Philip bows out of Battle of Jutland event

Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip has “reluctantly” pulled out of plans to attend a World War One commemoration service in Scotland on doctor’s advice.
The Duke of Edinburgh, 94 had been due to join in events marking the Battle of Jutland with daughter Princess Anne on Tuesday (31May16), but he has decided to listen to medics and skip the trip.
A statement released by a royal spokesperson at Buckingham Palace reads: “Following doctor’s advice, the Duke of Edinburgh has reluctantly decided not to attend the commemorations marking the Battle of Jutland tomorrow in Kirkwall and Hoy.”
Princess Anne, the Queen’s second child with Prince Philip, will instead represent the British royals on her own.
No specific reason has been given for Prince Philip’s cancellation, but he is not thought to be suffering from any illness and is not expected to scrap any other forthcoming engagements.
The Prince has previously battled ill health – he spent his 92nd birthday recovering from stomach surgery in 2013 and had to receive treatment in 2012 after suffering a bladder infection. He also had a stent inserted during heart surgery in 2011.
