British Press Rails Against Paltrow

Sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut–a lesson Gwyneth Paltrow may be learning the hard way at the moment.

In an interview with Now magazine, Paltrow, who has dated such American hunks as Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, lamented the reticence of British men when it comes to dating.

The 29-year-old actress, who made London her home while appearing in the critically acclaimed play Proof, told the magazine, “British people don’t seem to ask each other out.

“If someone asks you out, they are really going out on a limb, whereas in America, it happens all the time. Someone will come up to you and ask you for dinner, and you’ll say, ‘Sure.’ It’s no big deal, and no weight should be attached to it. It’s only dinner, for God’s sake,” she explained.

Reuters reports the British tabloids, hungry for some juicy news in a rather dry summer, are having a field day with Paltrow‘s “Casanova moan,” rallying in defense of the beleaguered British man.

“Sorry, Gwyn, but you nasal, gum-chewing U.S. girls are frighteningly sexless and just plain dull,” railed London’s The Daily Mirror tabloid on Friday, while The Daily Mail suggested Paltrow‘s true unhappiness stems from the fact she lost Affleck to Jennifer Lopez.

Even London’s The Times got into the fun by printing a list of eligible bachelors Paltrow may be interested in dating, including steeplechase jockey Richard Johnson, who just broke up with Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter Zara Phillips. The paper did admit, however, Johnson “is a tad boring and rumored to be prone to jealousy.”
