Broadway’s Janis Joplin gets the chance to record forgotten tune

A song written for Janis Joplin that the tragic blues singer never got the chance to record has been added to the Broadway cast album of hit musical A Night With Janis Joplin. Mary Bridget Davies, who portrays Joplin onstage, got the chance to belt out Jerry Ragovoy’s song I’m Gonna Rock My Way to Heaven for the album.
The track was originally written for the singer just before her death in 1970.
Show producer Dan Chilewich tells Rolling Stone magazine, “Mary was so thrilled with the opportunity to record for the first time a song written specifically for Janis by the great Jerry Ragovoy, and watching her perform it was a real treat for everyone present, especially Jerry’s wife, Bev Ragovoy, who was kind enough to allow this to come to fruition.”
The newly-released cast album also features songs by Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Etta James.
