Charles Kelley’s wife: ‘Brief 2008 split paved way to marriage’

Lady Antebellum star Charles Kelley’s wife is convinced a brief split early on in their romance was the best thing to have happened to the couple.
The country singer began dating music representative Cassie McConnell more than a decade ago, juggling his love life as he pursued his music dreams with the Need You Now hitmakers, and although the pair will celebrate its 10th wedding anniversary this July (19), Cassie reveals their journey to happiness wasn’t a completely smooth ride.
In a candid chat on the Get Real -w- Caroline Hobby podcast, Cassie admits spending time apart from Charles for a few months was likely the push they both needed to realise they were meant for one another.
“We were broken up that whole summer of 2008,” she remembered. “It was great. I dated other people. My heart was honestly always with Charles, but I met a lot of nice people, which was nice.”
Charles eventually reached out to Cassie after returning from a tour, and suggested they get back together and take things much more seriously.
“He called me one day in early August and said, ‘I’m coming back from the road and I just wanted to talk about next steps for us,’ and I was thinking he was talking about just getting back together, but he was talking about getting engaged,” she shared.
Cassie listened to her heart and ended up accepting Charles’ marriage proposal that Christmas. They tied the knot in the Bahamas in July, 2009, and are now proud parents to son Ward, who turned three last week (11Feb19).
