Singer Charlie Puth has opened up about his “very short-lived” but “impactful” romance with Selena Gomez, revealing it really messed him up.
The See You Again star recorded the duet We Don’t Talk Anymore with the beautiful Latina and the couple embarked on a doomed fling that left Charlie heartbroken.
Neither Puth nor Gomez have spoken at length about their romance, but now he has opened the door a little on what went down, while talking about the only song he finds “bearable” from his debut album.
“It’s about a particular moment in my life, when someone very close to me wanted the attention of somebody else,” he explains coyly during a new Billboard magazine expose. “When I found that out and we ended it, I might have done some shady things too, and she might have asked me, ‘How long has this been going on?'”
“I don’t kiss and tell,” he adds, “but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes. And that’s what was happening. (It was) very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up.
“I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in – what I was getting myself into.”
Charlie, who has also been linked to Meghan Trainor and actress/singer Bella Thorne, admits he still enjoys performing the song that brought him so much pain, adding, “You gather up a bunch of emotion with the life shovel, throw it in the life bucket, mix it up, and she (Gomez) evoked such good emotion on that song, it was a pleasure working with her. That’s why I’m always happy to sing it, even though it came from a dark point in my life.”
Shortly after dating Puth, Selena hooked up with The Weeknd. They broke up last summer (17) and she’s now back with her ex, Justin Bieber.
