Chloe Grace Moretz: ‘Studio bosses were scared of Cameron Post film’

Chloe Grace Moretz has claimed that Hollywood bosses were “terrified” to release her latest film.
The Kick-Ass actress portrays a teenage girl forced into a gay conversion therapy centre by her conservative guardians in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which is based upon the 2012 novel of the same name by Emily M. Danforth. Though the movie won the Grand Jury Prize for US Drama at the Sundance Film Festival in January (18), Chloe has now alleged that film executives weren’t in any hurry to distribute the project due to its subject matter.
“This is the first movie, easily in the last 20 years that I know of, to have won the Grand Jury Prize (at Sundance) that hasn’t been sold overnight,” she told Porter magazine. “People were terrified to release a movie like this. Especially centred around a young lesbian character who isn’t having wild throes of male-gaze lesbian sex.”
Chloe went on to share that she was instantly intrigued by the character of Cameron when she read over Desiree Akhavan and Cecilia Frugiuele’s script for the first time. But she knew she had to sign on got the project when she began to research conversation therapy in the U.S.
“When I was reading the script, I always thought (conversion therapy) was kind of an archaic issue,” the 21-year-old said. “Then we started to lift the lid and it was this onslaught of information. It’s legal in 37 states and it’s only illegal in the other states for minors, so it’s pretty much legal in all of America. That’s an issue.”
During her preparation, Chloe also spoke to two of her brothers, who are openly gay, about their experiences growing up. And she added that they were both “super excited” that she was involved with the movie.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post also stars Sasha Lane and Jennifer Ehle.
