Chris Hemsworth has alleged former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott made an offensive joke about his charity work helping abused children.
Hemsworth, 34, is a patron of the Australian Childhood Foundation, an organization that provides support for victims of child abuse.
In 2014 the father-of-three met with Abbott, who was then Australia’s prime minister, to discuss how children can be protected from institutional abuse in schools.
In an interview with GQ Australia, Hemsworth recalled,”Tony Abbott said to me, ‘You know, I went to a Catholic school as a kid but no one did anything to me. Maybe I wasn’t good-looking enough.’ I’m sat there, like, ‘Is he kidding? Is he making light of this issue?'”
The star is incredibly proud of his work with the children’s charity, for whom he has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Chris is taking part in a charity walk in Melbourne, Australia later this month (Oct17) to raise funds for the foundation and told Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper how important he believed the organization’s work is.
“We know that loving relationships are critical to healthy development,” he said. “All children need and deserve love. It’s also time to celebrate love as the central force in our defence of children. Every time we stand up for children, that’s love in action.”
Abbott is a controversial figure in Hemsworth’s homeland and was ousted as prime minister by members of his own Liberal Party in 2015.
Last month (Sep17) he slammed officials from Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) for hiring the rapper Macklemore to perform at their showpiece Grand Final game.
Abbott took exception to Macklemore performing his gay rights anthem Same Love, as Australians are currently voting in a nationwide survey to decide whether to legalize gay marriage. The hip-hop star’s performance went ahead and he defiantly played the track in front of 80,000 fans.
