Chris Stapleton didn’t expect to sing on Justin Timberlake album

Country singer Chris Stapleton had no intention of adding his vocals to Justin Timberlake’s new album until the pop star suggested he “take a verse”.
The Grammy winner reveals he was invited to join Justin in the studio for a songwriting session for his upcoming album Man of the Woods, and although Stapleton knew he would be contributing to the composition of a number of tracks, he didn’t expect to be singing, too.
“I really just went out to Los Angeles to write songs with him,” the Broken Halos star told Billboard. “That was one of those things where there wasn’t necessarily a plan. He was like, ‘Alright, you hop in there and take a verse.’ I’m like, ‘You want me to do what…?'”
The tune in question was the newly-released Say Something.
“It came out great,” Chris said. “I had a blast with him, he’s a great creative force and one of those guys that if you get a chance to work with him, you should.”
Stapleton also co-wrote Morning Light, Justin’s duet with Alicia Keys, and The Hard Stuff, while he can also be heard jamming on Filthy.
“I play guitar on the very first sound you hear on Filthy,” he shared. “That’s me playing with a delay pedal on a jazz master.”
It’s not the first time the two artists have worked together. They teamed up for a special performance at the 2015 Country Music Association Awards.
Man of the Woods, Timberlake’s follow-up to 2013’s The 20/20 Experience, is released on Friday (02Feb18).
