Common has become the first rapper to score an Emmy, Grammy and Oscar.

The Selma star picked up his first Emmy Award over the weekend (09-10Sep17) at the Creative Arts Emmys when Letter to the Free, his contribution to the soundtrack of Ava DuVernay’s 13th documentary, took the top prize for outstanding original music and lyrics.

He can now add that honour to his 2002 Grammy Award for his Love of My Life collaboration with Erykah Badu, and the Oscar he shares with John Legend for their Selma anthem Glory.

If Common ever scores a Tony Award, he will become only the 13th entertainer to pick up all four of the major creative arts awards and become what’s known in the industry as an EGOT.
