The Grammy winner will return to the New York stage with American Idiot director Michael Mayer, who is giving the original 1965 play a gender-bending twist.
The original was about a young woman who discovers she lived in 18th century Britain in a past life.
Connick, Jr. will star as a gay florist’s assistant, who turns to a psychiatrist to help him quit smoking and discovers he may have spent his past life as 1940s jazz singer, Melinda Wells.
Connick, Jr. admits he’s “really excited” about the new role. He last appeared as an actor on Broadway in 2006 musical The Pajama Game.
