Country singers get their day in court

Country singers Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney took the stand Tuesday to give jurors their take on a backstage skirmish in June with sheriff’s deputies that reportedly started with a misunderstanding about a police horse at the George Strait Country Music Festival. The charges claim McGraw assaulted a police officer and resisted arrest when the sheriff was attempting to get Chesney off a police horse, which Chesney said he had permission to ride. McGraw reportedly admitted to pushing the deputy but said he feared for his friend would be hurt. McGraw also said he was grabbed and clubbed twice on the knee with a nightstick. Chesney testified that he was never given a chance to explain that he had permission to ride the horse. The ride was supposed to be “an innocent, fun gesture,” The Associated Press reported. Closing arguments in the case were scheduled to begin Wednesday.
